It's a Brick HOUSE!!!

Funk musical genre was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. This genre later linked soul music to black musical styles. This musical genre is closely associated with political environments that express black pride and civil rights. Funk is commonly referred and viewed as a form of dance music. Funk formed from the musical genres Jazz, Blues and R&B. Funk is known to have “groovy” sounds that are upbeat and syncopated. In Funk music, lyrics discuss partying, social relationships and romance. This relates to soul music in that it expresses emotions and explored identity. Funk was performed by large groups, and large bands. In the music, there is emphasis on the first beat of  a measure following a certain rhythm. This musical genre became a voice for many black individuals, the Black Power Movement and helped give pride to black communities. This can be seen through artist’s music such as James Brown. Brown was considered the Godfather of Soul because of his notorious reputation within music and performances. He crossed the boundaries of musical styles and redefined a new type of style. In the 1990s, Funk was just then becoming mainstream music. This allowed for a much broader audience to listen through R&B and Soul radio stations.

Some popular artists and groups during this time period are James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Ohio Players, Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic, Parliament and The Isley Brothers to name a few. These artists not only influenced many other artists, but they left an impact on the musical genre with their musical influence and talents.
