I decided to research the Grammy Award-winning folk musician Rhiannon Giddens. Giddens is a folk singer and songwriter from North Carolina who co-founded a folk, blues, and country group known as the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Giddens and her band members all sing and rotate through the banjo, fiddle, harmonica, bones, jug, and kazoo. While researching this musician it was admirable to see how she uses her creative gifts to bring attention to the disparities, oppression, and … that African Americans have experienced. In an interview on the GioBlack Podcast Network, Giddens was asked why she wrote the song titled Build A House. She explains that she wrote this because she “ was frustrated with the continuing ignorance…about where American history comes from. You know. And just how we keep having to tell the story.” Overall, It is admirable to see Giddens to combine her passion for advocacy with her passion for folk music genres.
