  • Jazz has more of an upbeat compared to Classical music.

  • Upbeat is just as important as the downbeat

  • Jazz is spontaneous and instant swing

  • You have to practice and learn the instrument which is the most difficult to do 

  • Jazz was not originally called jazz,

  • It was banned in the Louis Armstrong era

  • Jazz is widespread

  • Origin is in West Africa by creating a new music

  • Music from Africa went to The Caribbean and collided with European culture which is how it evolved 

  • There were many instruments that made the sound of jazz music

  • Jazz first led to Ragtime 

 

  • Ragtime flourished in the West side

    • Louis Armstrong is known as the father of jazz

  • Louis Armstrong 

    • Widely known as a hero

    • Master of the trumpet 

    • Understand and mastered the art of music , specifically jazz

    • Took 100’s of trumpet players to produce Louis Armstrong

    • Had a wife who changed his career drastically

    • He left Chicago for New York to be in an orchestra 

 

  • 21st century Music (Jazz)

    • The origin of modern music derived in New Orleans 

    • San Francisco exposition 

    • Much anticipated from the swing era

    • 1917 the world’s first jazz recording 

    • 5 more years until black artists could record

    • Louis Armstrong worked with a band across the Mississippi River 

    • Chicago was the hot spot for jazz in the 1950’s

    • Many people did not have pianists 

    • Joe Oliver was one of the biggest names to come out of Chicago 

    • Oliver drank himself to death in 1931 and became a bigger legend than anyone could fathom

    • Needed white soloists to spark up their sound 

  • Ragtime jazz had been created which went with the Charleston dance 

  • Ube Black , Jazz B. Johnson , Duke Ellington , JJ Johnson 

  • Harlem was the new hotspot for black America 

  • Cultural renaissance took place in Harlem 

  • Jazz was compared to promiscuity and was said to be intoxicating 

  • Ellington band became very well known as the made a name for themselves in New York

    • Ellington’s music was very easy to understand

    • It became known as dance music, fine arts , and academic music in the 1970’s
