Gospel Music is music preached from the bible to narrate stories derived from the bible. Although gospel music can be traced all the way back to the time of slavery it wasn’t fully introduced until the 1800’s. Gospel music came out of church hymns as a way to make it easier to sing along to. Gospel music was considered to originate from Southern black churches in the United States. 

Traditional Gospel

Traditional Gospel which are usually performed by large choir groups in churches. Traditional gospel was greatly influenced by African Americans spirituals and hymns. Thomas Andrew Dorsey was considered to be "the father of gospel music."

Contemporary Gospel

During the 1960's gospel began to transform from it's traditional style to a more modern style. During this time gospel moved away from large soulful choirs toward more solo artists. In this new sub-genre of gospel several other musical genres such as, jazz, funk, disco and R&B was detected.
