Gospel music originated in the early 20th century. Gospel music has roots in blues and spiritual music. Some spiritual songs had hidden messages in them and were used by slaves to spread messages. Gospel songs focused on biblical roots and themes and was a way to integrate gospel culture in the church and worship services. The father of gospel was considered to be Thomas A. Dorsey. He had roots in blues, jazz, and was a pianist.
When Gospel was first introduced into the church scene, it was rejected because of its similarities to blues and jazz. Some popular gospel artists include Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, The Clark Sisters, and new 2000’s decade, Kirk Franklin. BeBe and CeCe Wyanis are also very popular artist, along with Yolanda Adams.
