THE BEGINNING OF GOSPEL
Gospel music is deeply rooted in both African American history and culture. The beginning of Gospel music dates back to slavery. Black slaves were forced into religion when they arrived to America, specifically forced into Christianity. Soon after, Gospel was created. What made Gospel different, was the way Black people choose to make Christianity their own.
Early Gospel
The earliests form of Gospel music were Negro Spirituals. That was when slaves added rhythm and harmonies to the European hymns. The foundations of Negro Spirituals are the foundations of Gospel music.
