Gospel

Singing about God has always been an imperative element of Black Christian culture. The evolution of gospel can be divided into three periods. The transitional period, the traditional period and now contemporary. The transitional period was the ending of Jubilee quartets. The sound was changing from negro spirituals to more upbeat and instrumental gospel. Traditional gospel would be defined by many modern church choirs its the sound most people associate gospel with. The final era or type of gospel is contemporary characterized by nontraditional elements such as rap.

Gospel is often formatted in a call and response manner mimicking a Black preaching style. It also incorporates shouts, stomps, and claps. Popular gospel artists include :

– Mahalia Jackson

– Five Blind Boys

– Kirk Franklin

– Yolanda Adams

– Tamela Mann

– Thomas A. Dorsey
