Gospel

Through the years gospel music was there to help all people through the worst of times and the best of times. The gospel genre originated in the 1930s however, in the late 1800s black people would come together and give praise and worship. The black people coming together stemmed from back when they were slaves singing negro spirituals. Gospel and giving praise were always big in the black community, but when the black people began to move into white communities it became big amongst all races. This is one of the most popular songs from this time. It was published in 1943, in Fort Valley, GA.

  • There are four styles of Gospel music:
  • Traditional – Sang by a large choir and reminded people of a community coming together

  • Contemporary – Was more personal because individual people in the choir would have solos and tell their testimonies

  • Quartet -Was a small group of soloist singing in harmony

  • Praise and Worship – Is a mix of styles and is the most common nowadays

Some famous artist in this genre include: Kirk Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Thomas A. Dorsey, and Yolanda Adams
