Evolution of Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop has evolved over the years in sound and style. Hip-Hop originated with the Brown communities in the Bronx and Harlem in New York City in the 1970s. Hip-Hop is really a way of life that encompasses various different forms including dj-ing, graffiti, break dancing, mc-ing and verbal musical expression. Hip-Hop music over the years has gone from “gangsta” rap to music about the issues to popular dance music. Hip-hop started out as music with a message. Rappers talk about the realities of life and rapped about social issues. Nearing the 2000s, “gangsta” rap arose. This is when we see the entrance of rappers such as Tupac and Notorious BIG. This music was more sexually explicit and talked openly about drugs, crime, murder and more. In the modern day, Hip-Hop has become a mixture of these two periods. And in the modern day Hip-Hop became more oriented around being dance music with the appearance of Hip-Hop dances such as jerking or the dougie.
