Gospel Music and its Role in the Civil Rights Movement by Tarah K. Opara
The Civil Rights Movements is one of the most important times in black culture. With our ancestors fighting for equality, the morale of the black community would reach lows and stay stagnant. Gospel music was very important to the black culture because it would motivate protestors through marches, pass the time and provide mental/spiritual strength to withstand the brutality and racism during those times.
Gospel music is said to speak to the soul, to help aide through tough times and help one rejoice when blessings come. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, ”the freedom songs are playing a strong and vital role in our struggle.”
