My Favorite Genre: Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is my favorite genre because it happens to be the field I want to pursue. I have loved Musical Theatre for as long as I can remember. I was in my first production in 6th grade (The Music Man). The music was so fun and exciting, I could never explain how much I loved how the music flowed with the story. How the lyrics and melodies pushed the story-lines forward. Musical Theatre is a beautiful form of storytelling and being able to use that genre of music is a difficult thing. Each composer has to use a blend of all the genres we have learned about this year. If the song is sad and heartfelt, the song writer might take some aspects of blues to connect with the audiences emotion of feeling down. Or for example, The Color Purple, is a musical that needed to use elements from ragtime or negro spirituals given the time period and subject matter. Musical Theatre is my favorite genre because it has the ability and freedom to transform into any genre of music is requires at that time.
