SZA Article

This article was published on Black Music Scholars by Elizabethpooleq on December 8, 2019. It briefly discussed Solana Imani Rowe’s, SZA’s, early background. The post did an excellent job of informing the readers how SZA’s early life set the stage for her current and ongoing success. The author included how SZA’s inspirations such as Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and Wu-Tang Clan influenced her music. The posts goes onto detail the music records that SZA released year by year including singles, EPs, and her album Ctrl. Further, the author included the numerous accolades that SZA received: five Grammy nominations, famous collaborations, and being part of soundtracks on well known movies or series. Finally to enhance the post the author added lesser known songs of SZA from her EP or her album. Overall this post was very informative and to a reader who knows very little about SZA or a lot this post would be very educational.  

Gunna Article

This article details how famous American rapper and singer Gunna is utilizing his fame and money to contribute to philanthropic efforts and give back to his hometown community. The article details how Gunna’s Great Giveaway Foundation alongside the Black Music Action Coalition plans on giving a monthly stipend of $1,000 and mentorship in music, film, fashion, and tech to 30 families within the South Fulton, Georgia county zip code. This new initiative is part of Gunna’s and the Black Music Action Coalition’s plan to unite people involved or interested in the music industry together. Overall this article was very informative and helps the reader connect to a well known music artist outsider their music.  

Lil Jon Article 

In the article above, it details how Lil Jon, an award winning Atlanta rapper, made an appearance during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The article explained that during the roll call, Georgia decided to confirm VP Kamala Harris as their official Democratic nominee in an unconventional manner. Lil Jon, representing Georgia, decided to perform some of his more well known songs during the roll call, such as “Turn Down For What.” Through his performance not only did Lil Jon contribute to the campaign for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, but also helped to illuminate how the music industry in Georgia, Atlanta particularly, is powered by Black artists. Overall, the article does a good job explaining how Lil Jon performance helped further endorse VP Harris for President along with representing his Atlanta roots.
