Born Andre Romelle Young, Dre was born on February 18, 1965 He was the first child born to Theodore and Verna Young. Both of his parents were musicians. His father was in an R&B group called The Romells Which is where Young’s middle name derive from. His mother Verna was a part of a singing group called the four aces but had to quit the group shortly before Young was born. After his parents split his family moved from place to place due to his mother remarrying several times. After receiving a mixer for Christmas in 1984 he created his own home studio. He started hanging out at a nightclub called Eva after dark where he got his first chance to work The turntables.He started working house parties and clubs with the World Class Wreckin’ Cru.

Early Career

In 1986 Dr. Dre met O’shea Jackson, Who is later known as ice cube. These two teamed up And began writing songs for a record label called ruthless records which is a label started by Eazy-E. .After one of the songs written by the duo Dr. Dre and ice cube was denied by a group signed  to ruthless records, Eazy-E then started NWA. NWA consisted of Eazy-E, Dre, Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella. The group released their first album in 1987 and a year later debut their most popular album entitled Straight Outta Compton. This album did great numbers despite the lack of support from radios, media or at the time MTV. In 1989 Ice Cube departed from the group NWA due to financial disagreements with their management. In 1991 NWA was at its peak and Dr. Dre begin to slowly depart from the group after he had been brought up on assault charges. He then left the group to form a record label with Suge Knight and the D.O.C.  

In 1992 Dr. Dre released his first solo single entitled the cover. This single was the beginning of his longtime collaborations with Snoop Dogg who he discovered through his step brother Warren G. Also in 1992 Dr. Dre appeared on Snoop Dogg album the chronic which with multi platinum and won a Grammy.. During this time he also worked on hip hop legend Tupac Shakur’s award winning album All Eyez on Me, which featured two number one singles.  He was at the peak of his career for the next four years as a rapper and producing. In 1996 Dr. Dre left Death Row Records due to technique differences between him and Knight. He then formed his own record label called Aftermath. He then began producing and writing for other rap artist and even for films.

In 2008 Dr. Dre expanded his hip-hop brand by founding  beats electronics with partner Jimmy Iovine. He announced the company under the name Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Headphones which became wildly popular among the general population and celebrities. He also launched an online music streaming service called Beats Music January 2014. Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre also funded the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology, and the Business of Innovation.

May 2014 Apple made an announcement that they would be purchasing beats for approximately $3 billion, which skyrocketed Dr. Dre‘s net worth approximately $800 million. This deal made him the richest rap star according to Forbes. Also after making this deal, Dre and Iovine both joined Apple and assumed executive roles in the company. In 2015 Dr. Dre announced his release of his third album Compton: a soundtrack which would coincide with the release of the NWA’s biopic called Straight Outta Compton. Dr. Dre is currently still the founder and CEO of Aftermath Entertainment and still sits in his executive position at Apple.
