During the 1950s, jazz began to lean towards the aesthetic that less is more. Cool jazz is a subgenre of jazz that emphasized lyrical melodic styles, softer tonal colors, and invoked relaxation.
Contrary to the acceptance of cool jazz today, the genre was initially labeled as a “white sound”. Typically in cool jazz, instruments like drums, pianos, trumpets, trombones, and saxophones are utilized. Some scholars perceive cool jazz as the decline of bebop and the rise of rhythm and blues. Some major artists who are known for their cool jazz style include Miles Davis and Gil Evans.
