Contemporary Gospel

Thomas Dorsey is known as the father of gospel music because of his up-tempo blues arrangements of gospel hymns. Gospel music is known for call and response, shout, and speaking in tongues. It has gone through several periods including transitional and traditional, now being contemporary as we know it. Contemporary gospel music was created by and continue to be done so by African-Americans.

Contemporary gospel music blends traditional gospel roots with modern sounds, creating a dynamic genre that resonates across generations. It incorporates elements from various musical styles such as R&B, hip-hop, jazz, and pop, making it more accessible to younger audiences while still maintaining its spiritual and uplifting message. Artists like Kirk Franklin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Jonathan McReynolds have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of gospel music, introducing innovative arrangements and production techniques. Contemporary gospel often addresses personal struggles, social justice, and faith, creating a rich, emotionally charged experience that connects deeply with listeners both within and beyond the church.

Contemporary gospel began in the seventies and was well established by the end of the eighties. We’ve seen artists emerge and take over the genre including Kirk Franklin, Walter Hawkins, Shirley Caesar, Marvin Sapp, Mary Mary, etc. Radios and mega churches often popularize these songs.

Each song shows and highlights important characteristics of gospel music. I think the strongest element of gospel that is most present in each of these songs would be call and response. As someone who has been studying music, “call and response” is something that is uniquely specific to gospel music. It is actually my favorite aspect of gospel music because the lead singer can usually encourage and get across a clear message to their audience. Overall, this shares a clear overview of popular contemporary gospel music songs.
