Concert Report: Ella Mai

Ella Mai was featured at Spelman College and Morehouse College’s Homecoming Neo-Soul Concert on October 13, 2018 at 7 P.M. in Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College.  The concert lasted for about two and a half hours, including the openers and the main performer.  One soloist and one trio opened for Ella Mai. All of the music that was played before and during the concert was old and new soul and rhythm and blues.

Ella Mai performed six pieces (listed below, not in chronological order) and was accompanied by a band with a drummer and a guitarist.

  • Boo’d Up (Ready)
  • Naked (Ella Mai – single)
  • Trip (Ella Mai)
  • 10,000 Hours (CHANGE)
  • Breakfast in Bed (Ready)
  • Dangerous (Ella Mai)

My least favorite pieces were only the songs of hers that I did not know prior to her performance — Breakfast in Bed and Dangerous.  Both of these songs were beautifully sung, but I did not enjoy myself as much because I could not sing along.  I knew the rest of the songs that she performed, but my favorite piece of her concert was Naked.  I enjoyed the other two songs as much as I liked Naked, but because of how often they were played on the radio and at events, I was happy to hear her perform songs that were not as played out.

Overall, I had a very good time at this concert and I think people who truly listen to her music did also.  A lot of people only went to hear her perform one or two songs so I would assume that they did not enjoy themselves as much as other people did.
