Characteristics Of The Blues

The Blues is a genre of music that originated in African American communities specifically in the south of the U.S. This genre of music typically express ideas of hardship and longing. The Blues has had a huge influence on many other genres, such as R&B and rock and roll.

It is common for the Blues to portray a 12 bar structure. Meaning the music is divided into 12 measures of bars. In addition, notes are sung and or played at a slightly lower pitch that the major scale. This allows for the listener to feel the melancholic vibes through the sounds.

A pattern that is commonly used in the Blues genre is call and response. The call is answered by a secondd phrase which is the response. This is often portrayed between the singer and the instrument. This technique dates back to African musical traditions.
