"If I really hopped back into rapping, I’d f--- these n---as up."-Brent Faiyaz ,2018
Brent Faiyaz is a contemporary R&B singer, songwriter, and producer whose sly vocals, frequently applied to atmospheric slow jam productions, resemble a distinctive cross between Slim (of 112) and the Weeknd. The Maryland native has been active since the mid-2010s, starting with an array of digital singles and a four-track EP entitled A.M. Paradox. As one-third of the group Sonder, he issued the seven-track Into in early 2017. Later that year, around the time his name first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 — as a featured artist on “Crew,” off GoldLink’s At What Cost and the Insecure, Season 2 soundtrack — Faiyaz released Sonder Son, an album recorded during a monthlong stay in the Dominican Republic. A year later he delivered his third EP, Lost.
Out of the many genres that we have discussed in class, Brent Faiyaz is most closely related to R&B. His sound and lyrics have a distinctive Blues quality to it , that is known for in more traditional R&B. However, the “rhythm” is different. Most of his music doesn’t have the typical measures of four beats that is associated with R&B music. He originally started off rapping. He learned that early on that there were too man y rappers and he needed to be different if he wanted to be recognized. He was influenced by artist like Lauryn Hill started singing and rapping. Over time he began to focus more on his singing, though he hasn’t completely let go of his raps. His musical versatility makes him stand out amongst other artist.
Faiyaz began uploading his music onto SoundCloud in 2014 and moved from his hometown Columbia, Maryland to Charlotte, North Carolina before ultimately settling in Los Angeles, California to further his music career. On January 19, 2015, he released his debut single “Allure”. On June 1, 2016, Faiyaz released “Invite Me”, the lead single from his upcoming debut EP.On September 19, 2016, his 21st birthday, the EP entitled A.M. Paradox was released and received positive reviews from music critics
In October 2016, Faiyaz formed a group named Sonder with record producers Dpat and Atu, releasing their debut single “Too Fast” on October 25. On December 16, 2016, Faiyaz was featured alongside rapper Shy Glizzy on the single “Crew” by rapper GoldLink.
From his beginning EP to his most recent Album, Brent Faiyaz’ music has always been lit.
Brent Faiyaz is an Amazing artist with a versatile style of music. I hope to see him become a more popular R&B artist and see his music at the top of the charts. His significance comes from his sheer talent and versatility and he will surely be even more popular in the years to come.
