Bed and Breakfast Blues

The musical genre of Blues first originated in the late 19th century.   The deep roots of blues began on southern plantations and spanned throughout the years across the country. In the beginning, sharecroppers would sing while in the field and later these sings evolved in the genre now known as blues. One thing that makes Blues unique from many other genres is that many artists in the late 19th century used the guitar and the harmonica as instruments in order to convey their messages in their music. Additionally, some blues music as contained the piano, a bass and even drum. What really makes this music unique is the lyrics of blues songs. A lot of times, blues can be loosely tied to music about being lonely and sad. Other blues artists disagree and say that this music is not just about being sad, but just about the ups and downs of life in general.

One of the states that is most important to the cultivation of Blues is Mississippi. Early artists like Robert Johnson, Skip James, and Bukka White all had major influences on the beginning of Blues. Later artists like W.C. Handy, B.B. King, James Cotton and Muddy Waters carried the music throughout the 20th century. One of the most important places that helped spread the genre of Blues were Bed-and-Breakfasts. These are typically inns that look like a house from the outside. On the inside held many rooms, and a place for people to congregate to listen to music. Artists from the Delta like B.B. King, spent much of their time playing in places like Bed-and-Breakfasts which helped spread the music
