Blues is a music genre that has originated in the South of the United States in the 1870s. The roots from Blues started from was from African music traditions,  African American work songs, and negro spirituals. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, chants, and rhythmic sounds. The Blues scale includes the twelve bar blues. Of these twelve bars, there are noted called “Blue Notes” and its usually thirds, fifths, or sevenths that are apart of this. The typical instruments that are used with Blues are the guitar, banjo, piano, harmonica, vocals, bass, drums, blues harp, and slide guitar. There are multiple genres that are fused together in relation to Blues as well. Blues is known for its lyrics, bass lines, and instrumentation. There is typically a more common pattern which include the AAB pattern which means the line is sung over the four first bars and is repeated over the next four while the concluding line is longer. The Blues genre has influenced many other types of music such as rock and roll, jazz, and popular music used in today’s terms. Popular Blues performers include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Bob Dylan. Popular songs include “Blues in the Night”, “Since I fell for you,” and “Please send me someone to love.”
