Black Blues Musicians

Black musicians have played an essential role in the development and popularization of blues music, and many of the most influential blues artists throughout history have been African American. Here are some of the most popular and significant Black blues musicians, whose work has shaped the genre and inspired generations of musicians: 

B.B. King (1925–2015)

  • Notable for: “The Thrill Is Gone,” “Every Day I Have the Blues,” “Rock Me Baby”
  • B.B. King is often regarded as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time. Known for his expressive guitar playing (his guitar, “Lucille,” became a symbol of his artistry) and his smooth, soulful voice, King brought blues to a wider audience. His signature style of bending strings to create expressive, mournful notes became a hallmark of his sound.
  • Legacy: King’s influence is immeasurable, impacting not just blues but also rock and soul. His career spanned more than six decades, and he won numerous awards, including 15 Grammy Awards.

Etta James (1938–2012)

  • Notable for: “At Last,” “Tell Mama,” “I’d Rather Go Blind”
  • While Etta James is often associated with soul and R&B, her early work in blues was pivotal to her success. With a powerhouse voice that could switch from blues to gospel to jazz, she was a versatile and influential figure in the world of American music.
  • Legacy: Known for her ability to convey deep emotion, her rendition of “At Last” is one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. Etta James’ blues roots laid the foundation for her success in many genres.

Robert Johnson (1911–1938)

  • Notable for: “Cross Road Blues,” “Hellhound on My Trail,” “Sweet Home Chicago”
  • Johnson is one of the most iconic and mysterious figures in blues. Known for his haunting lyrics and virtuosic guitar playing, Johnson’s influence is profound, especially in the Delta blues tradition. His music is often associated with the myth of him selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads to gain his musical ability.
  • Legacy: Johnson’s songs have been covered by countless artists, and his influence extends far beyond blues, into rock and folk. He’s considered a foundational figure for both the Delta blues and the larger blues genre.
