Solange: Angel of Soul


From her Angelic melodies, to harmonies and lyricism, Solange pushes listeners to see and reflect beyond the surface of life. Her music Is rooted in the sounds of R&B/soul, but adds an intellectual, artistic, & profound touch. Solange pushes the barriers of R&B, and uses her music to deliver creativity and well-rounded artistry to listeners. 

Artist History

Solange Piaget Knowles was born in Houston, Texas June 24, 1986. She was born to Alabama native Matthew Knowles and Texas native Tina Knowles. She became the younger sister to notable singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. 

Solange began singing at five years old, first performing at Six Flags in Texas. She began songwriting at nine, and considers writing to be her first passion. Knowles notes that she draws a lot of musical influence and inspiration from  Motown singers

Professional Career

Solange began working on her debut album ‘solo star’ in 2000. She co-wrote and co-produced the album with the involvement of notable artists, and producers such as Jermaine Dupri and The Neptunes. The album was released in 2003 under her fathers record label Music World Entertainment. It debuted at 49 on Billboard 200 and climbed to 23 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Knowles made vocal appearances through the early 2000s. She sang as lead for the Disney Channel show The Proud Family’s theme song. She was also featured on the soundtrack for the film Austin Powers in Goldmember.

 After releasing ‘Solo Star’, Solange began making multiple acting appearances, and following that took a career break. In 2008 she released her second album, ‘ Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams which charted at the top of Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart. This album was viewed as being more R&B than her debut album, with 60s/70s influence to the sound.

In May 2013, Solange announced she  created her own record label – Saint Records where a platform and spotlight would be given to R&b/hip-hop artists who were not mainstream. In September 2016, Solange released her highly acclaimed album, ‘A Seat at the Table’, which became a number one album in the U.S & contained her Grammy award winning son ‘Cranes in the Sky’. In March 2019, Solange followed up A Seat at the Table with her most recent album, ‘When I get Home’. When I get home debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart.

Social Involvement

Solange has always been committed to social justice, and even more committed in her adult life. Activism, organizing and protesting are a big part of who she is. She is known to use her platform to advocate for Black Lives Matter and Equality. She is intentional about creating art through music that presents representation and empowerment for the Black community, such as in songs like “Don’t Touch My Hair” and “FUBU”. Her activism led her to receive the first Lena Horne Prize for Artists Creating Social Impact.
