"Lift Every Voice: Marian Anderson, Florence B. Price And The Sound Of Black Sisterhood” Reflection

The “Lift Every Voice: Marian Anderson, Florence B. Price And The Sound Of Black Sisterhood” article by Alisha Lola Jones starts with a big question “When will we listen to our black women?” This question is so prominent because black women started most of the movements happening now. For example #BlackLivesMatter, #Metoo, and #SayHerName were all made by black women to encourage people to lift all their voices up, be proud, and believe that they are just as important as everyone else. Jones opened my eyes to the enormous impact Anderson and Price had on the movements happening today. Through their collaboration, Anderson and Price paved the way for all women to feel empowered. Although Anderson and Price never actually worked together, Price’s music helped Anderson begin her journey to helping black women. Anderson’s career in music made black women feel empowered by creating a strong sisterhood throughout all black women. Reading this article also helped me to see how little schools teach about black history. It surprised me that I had never heard of either of these impactful women during my history classes. I believe that it is essential that all people, regardless of race or gender, learn about the amazing things these women did. However, I think it is even more important that all black women know about Anderson and Price’s life because, without them, we may not have been where we are today. After reading this article, I feel more proud to be a strong, educated, black woman.
