And All That Jazz!

And All That Jazz!

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African American communities of New Orleans, United States. Beginning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jazz

developed its roots from genres such as blues and ragtime. Charles Joseph “Buddy” Bolden was an African American cornetist who was regarded by contemporaries as a

key figure in the development of a New Orleans style of ragtime music known as jazz. Musicians such as Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, and John Coltrane were also

influential figures in jazz. The musical hallmarks of jazz are improvisation, syncopation, a rhythmic propulsiveness known as swing, blues feeling, and harmonic

complexity. It is important to note that the development of the jazz ensemble was also key. Among the early jazz composers and arrangers who contributed to this

emerging sound were Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington (1899-1974), and Don Redman (1900-64).
