Gospel can be considered the modern day Negro Spirtuals. This style of music has a bibical theme and is composed similarly to Blues and soul music. A common theme for gospel is to give praise, thanks or worship to God.  There are many reasons in which Gospel may be sung such as for cermonies such as weddings or funerals, for peasure, relgious purposes or simpliy for entertainment. 

The story of the Music

Gospel music has a similar harmony to blues and jazz but instead focused on the them of God. It additionally incorporates some songs sung by jubilee quartets, spirituals, hymns as well as shouts.  It brings together black hymns with popular music of the given time period. In the Pentecostal church, gospel music is connected to “speaking in tongues” and shouting. 

Thomas Dorsey is thought of as the founder for gospel. His song “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” is one that he is best known for. He is a considered a best-selling songwriter. Soul singer Reverend C.L. Franklin who is also the father of Aretha Franklin produced about 70 albums during World War 2.
