The 1930s

In the 1930s the great depression defined the decade. Many Americans were affected by the economic collapse that left many poor and financially unstable. The government offered no assistance for black Americans experiencing racial hardships. The burden of a financial depression was even more disheartening. Black people in the workforce were often the first to be laid off from their jobs. During this, there was a large growth of community activism. African Americans created a huge switch in politics. Overwhelming voting for Franklin Roosevelt but still endured no social or finical change due to racist policies such as jim crow and discrimination in the New Deal.

The 1940s

After WW2 was declared, the political and financial situations in the US changed drastically. Many who were left jobless and homeless were now able to be employed. Due to the sudden demand and influx of jobs created from the war. Many black men who fought in the war experienced discrimination and injustice laws overseas as well as in the states.

Swing Era - Jazz 1930s-1940s

During the 1930s – 1940s Swing Jazz was dominant. This style took traditional elements of Jazz and used scores and arrangements. This type of Jazz was easy to listen to while incorporating a strong beat. Swing music was propelled into modern music during the decade due to dances such as the Charleston. Popular swing artists include Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. Swing was also called Big band music and often incorporated soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement.

Duke Ellington

Duke Ellington was born in Washington D.C in 1898 and by the late 1920s, he formed a band and became a regular player at Harlem’s famous Cotton Club. He became bored with the typical style of jazz and wanted to showcase the dissonant voices of each musician playing against the other. He was a bandleader and composer who transcended racial barriers.
