Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag is perhaps the most famous Ragtime song in the world. While many know the song, many do not know its composer is Black, just like the roots of the genre. Its origins stem from slavery- cake walks and coon songs are when slaves were made to be mimic slave masters and themselves for the amusement of the slave masters. In some cases. slaves who did so the best would get an award of cake. Ragtime is marked with heavy piano playing. Though Ragtime originally was demeaning and profitable for whites, artist like Eubie Blake and Scott Joplin became some of the most popular Ragtime artist of all time.
