The 90s pushed hip-hop to the forefront of music culture while also proving an especially fruitful decade for rhythm and blues through R&B. Black artists, began to draw on the black power visual culture for racial protest within music. Events such as the Rodney King riots and the Million Man March held influence for various black artists to create a voice in pop culture that never existed before. R&B dominated radio playlists, experienced record-breaking sales and provided consumers with a taste reminiscent of Motown’s early years, while mixing in contemporary flavor.
